High visibility clothing is personal protective equipment, that features reflective banding or sections which makes it clearly visible even at a distance. Hi vis is also designed to be seen at night, as the reflective surfaces areas will reflect light and make the wearer appear illuminated.
High visibility clothing is worn by a variety of people, from government agencies, workmen and security personnel, to civilians that need to be seen easily such as cyclists, hikers and hunters. Hi vis clothing can come in a variety of forms, like hi vis jackets and hi vis coats, and hi visibility trousers. It is also available in hi viz bomber jackets, and hi visibility clothing like waistcoats.
There are numerous studies that show the effectiveness of hi vis clothing. Some state that a cyclist wearing an item of hi vis clothing, like a hi vis jacket or a hi vis coat, can be seen by a motorist from up to a km away. Other studies have suggested that at night a cyclist wearing some hi visibility trousers will be much easy to see than one that is not wearing any hi visibility clothing.
There are many different standards for hi visibility clothing. In Europe it is EN 471:2003, which has 3 levels of protection.
Class 1 - this is the lowest level. For example hi visibility trousers that feature two 5cm bands of reflective material per leg.
Class 2 - this is for hi visibility clothing like a vest. It can feature 2 5cm strips of reflective material that pass around the body, or 1 strip and reflective braces.
Class 3 - the highest level for hi visibility clothing. When a hi viz bomber jacket, hi vis jacket or hi vis coat is worn with hi visibility trousers.
