Holsters are available in a range of styles, and are made to safely hold a pistol. Often they are placed in a location which allows for easy retrieval and immediate use, for example in leg holsters or belt holsters at the waist.

The are several uses for holsters. Pistol holsters will allow a firearm to be carried safely and securely, allowing the owner to perform whatever tasks they require with the peace of mind that their gun is secure in its holster. Pistol holsters also provide protection for much of the pistol itself, helping to keep it in good condition.

Holsters are normally made to be operated using just one hand. Traditionally they are made from stiff but durable materials such as leather, which allows the holster to maintain its shape, and also makes it easy for the user to return their weapon to the holster after use. Other materials that are frequently used for holsters are callistic nylon or plastic due to the durability that they provide. A lot of holsters are produced in dark colours such as black or brown, as this allows for them to be easily concealed under thin clothing. However increasingly some holsters are becoming available in brighter colours, providing alternatives for those that don't want a leg holster or belt holster in traditional dark colours.

Holsters are normally split into four broad categories, depending on their use. Duty holsters are worn normally by security personnel. Tactical holsters are used by the police and members of the military, and concealment holsters are made to be worn by plain clothes police and individuals that wish to conceal their weapons. Finally there are sporting holsters, used by hunters and people involved in shooting sports.

Duty holsters are holsters that are worn outside of clothes, and are made to be visable. They are normally built of leather, plastic and nylon, and traditionally designed to carry service and compact handguns. Generally duty holsters feature a high level of security retention, meaning it requires a certain amount of force to remove weapons from these types of pistol holsters. The reason for this is it makes it more difficult for the pistol to be snatched from the holster by a suspect, but it also means that it may take longer for the gun to be removed by the person wearing the holster. The balance of retention against the speed of removal is something that needs to be considered when selecting pistol holsters like this.

Tactical holsters are often provided in camouflage patterns due to their high usage by the military, and are normally constructed from nylon or plastic to provide enhance protection from the elements. These leg holsters will normally be in the drop leg design, some may also feature covering flaps to protect the firearm when not in use.

A concealment holster is normally lightweight and easy to conceal, and generally designed to carry subcompact and compact pistols. These pistol holsters are designed to be worn under clothing, and as such will they often have a broad surface areas that distribute pressure over a wider area of skin and makes these holsters a bit more comfortable for the wearer. These holsters ofen have broad outer sides, which helps reduce the shape of the weapon being carried and reduces its visibility through clothing.

Sporting holsters come in a variety of styles, dependent on the users needs. Pistol holsters that are used in sports can require quick access, for example in fast draw shooting competitions, while other sporting holsters provide high retention for activities such as handgun hunting. As with any sporting equipment these holsters are constantly evolving, providing technical advancements and advantages to participants. Holsters that are used for hunting tend to be the largest available, as they are built for large pistols and often have space for telescopic sights. Traditionally they will be carried in leather shoulder holsters, which need to be removed before the weapon can be drawn.

There are many types of pistol holsters that are available, allowing firearms to be carried at several different areas of the body. Commonly they are carried on the waist, either outside (OWB) or inside (IWB) the waistband in belt holsters, the upper leg in leg holsters, on the ankle in leg holsters, on the chest in belly or leather shoulder holsters, or the small of the back (SOB). Holsters can also be used to secure a pistols while it is transported in a bag, purse or briefcase.

Outside the waistband holsters are normally worn by police and military personnel, as belt holsters at the top of the leg. They allow for easy access to the firearm, but are sometimes concealed under a jacket or long shirt.

Inside the waistband holsters are designed to store the gun safely and securely inside the waistband of the wearers trousers, pressed directly against their leg. They are often made of supple leather and will normally be leg holsters or belt holsters, and some varieties will even allow the wearer to tuck a shirt over the holster.

Leather shoulder holsters are often considered the most comfortable holsters on the market, as they distribute the weight of the weapon across the wearers shoulders. Generally they allow for the pistol to be carried in  3 different positions, with the barrel either facing up, down or horizontally, depending on the preference of the owner. Leather shoulder holsters will often be used to carry heavier firearms, as they are more comftable to wear then some pistol holsters.

Sling holsters are similar to leather shoulder holsters, as they allow for greater weight distribution of the weapon. They feature a strap that is slung across the shoulder and secured with a strap across the chest. These pistol holsters will allow the owner to easily reach their weapon from a seated position.

A belly band holster is designed to secure the gun at any point across the belly of the wearer. These types of pistol holsters are often considered uncomfortable, and in order to remain in place must be secured tightly, as a result many users have compared the feeling to that of wearing a girdle.

Small of back holsters are designed to secure the gun at the bottom of the back. This position means that it is easy to carry large pistols with minimal imprints on outer clothing, making it ideal for covert carrying. However these types of holster have recently come under criticism, as if the gun were to discharge whilst in that position, for example during a fight, the wearer risks serious spinal damage.

Thigh holsters allows the wearer to place their firearm on their leg, where their arm would normally hang, to allow for quick and easy access. These leg holsters will often feature a drop leg design with buckles for secure retention, whilst also providing the owner with the ability to make a quick draw.

Ankle holsters are traditionally used for smaller, back up weapons, and are easily concealable at the bottom of the leg in a leg holster. These holsters are popular with law enforcement officers, however some complain that if the holster is not secure it can move during physical activity.

It is important to consider different factors when looking at pistol holsters. Holsters should provide easy access to the firearm, whilst keeping it in a stable and secure position when it is not in use.  Safety is also a major factor for holsters, the owner must ensure that the holster will securely house their pistol and prevent any type of accidental discharge. When looking at holsters that are worn externally then it is also important to note how well the holster retains the gun, as obviously the wearer does not want third parties to be able to easily remove their weapon. Size of holsters should also be considered, as it is often preferable for firearms to be kept concealed, for example under an untucked shirt or long jacket. It is also important for pistol holsters to be comfortable if they are going to be worn for prolonged periods of time, and the ease in which firearms can be both drawn and returned to holsters should also be considered.

Some holsters, such as leather shoulder holsters, are not designed to be kept in direct sunlight as it may fade them, so they should be stored in a cool, dark place when not in use. It is also important that pistol holsters are cleaned regularly to ensure there are no debris contained within them, as it is important that holsters are always empty of any foreign objects.
