Gore® Windstopper® Fabric Ultra thin and lightweight Extreme protection for extreme weather
Polartec® Polarfleece® National Uniform Police Fleece Lightweight, Breathable, Windproof, Durable
A Polar Fleece, of fleece for short, is normally made from Polyethylene terephthalate, and is made to mimic the warming qualities of wool, but at a fraction of the weight. It can be used for a variety of products, such as fleece jackets, hats, sweat shirts, hoodies etc. The creator of polar fleece, Aaron Feuerstein deliberately chose not to patent the product, as he wanted it to be used in as many different products as possible.
Fleeces are water resistant, traditionally holding less than 1% of their weight in water. It is lightweight and breathable, and polar fleece is renowned for its insulating powers. A fleece jacket is ideal for those doing physical activity outdoors, as the material allows perspiration to pass through easily, and is also machine washable. Polar fleece is also highly recyclable, and when it is made it can even be made out of recycled PET bottles, or old fleeces.
However, it should be noted that a polar fleece can be very flammable. A lot of fleeces are now treated to be flame retardant, especially the fleece jackets that are worn by emergency services. Some fleeces are also not wind proof, so when selecting a fleece jacket it is important to consider what environment it will be used in.
