Waterproof clothing is traditionally lightweight and breathable, and is designed to be resistant to water or wetting. Waterproof clothing is traditionally natural or synthetic fabrics that are treated or laminated with a variety of materials, such as runner, PVC or PU. This process helps the fabric to remain lightweight and breathable, while providing it with waterproof qualities.

One of the main benefits of waterproof jackets, coats and trousers is that while they are waterproof from the outside, they will allow water vapour to from inside to pass through. This makes them ideal for outdoor use, and waterproof material is increasingly being used for other items such as tents.
