Common logic may be that if body armour can stop a bullet then it should also be able to stop a knife. However this is not the case at all, as the impact of a bullet and a knife attack is completely different. In fact, a bullet proof vest will provide little to no resistance against a knife attack. This is because the fibers that are designed to "catch" the bullet can not disperse the energy of a concentrated stab or spike based attack. A stab vest will be needed if you are going to be exposed to blade based attcaks
The blades that provide the most serious type of threat to stab proof vests are known as engineered blades. These types of blades are designed to retain their shape and effectiveness when forced into a wooden block, and as a result even after a significant impact they can still be used in a relatively undamaged state. In order for a stab vest to qualify as a stab proof vest it must be able to resist an engineered blade, and not just standard household blades.
A stab proof vest is designed to protect from not just knife attacks, but also broken bottles and physical assault. Generally it is easier for a stab vest to protect against a smaller knife than a larger one, so as a result manufacturers will ensure that a stab proof vest will have panels taht provide protection against both 6 inch and 3 inch engineered blades, and standard stanley knife blades.
Stab proof vests are made up of materials with a very tight weave, as this prevents threats from piercing the fabric and causing damage. Stab vests can be made from tightly woven, heavy duty nylon, however recent trends have led to an increase in multi-threat Kevlar vests, which offer protection from bullet and stab threats, whilst others offer bullet, stab and spike protection.
It is important to note that not every stab proof vest will also offer spike protection. Because of the different types of penetration each threat offers the wearer must ensure that if they are going to face spike based threats they have a stab vest that will also protect them against that type of attack.
All our Kevlar stab proof vests comply to the minimum specification developd by the HOSDB (The Home Office Scientific Development Branch). No stab vest is completely stab proof, it is only stab resistant to the stated level of energy necessary to puncture it. The Home Office have stipulated the levels which a stab vest should withstand. A small number of manufacturers have submitted their stab proof vests to the Home Office for testing - all the Kevlar stab proof vests we supply have been certified by the Home Office.
We only deal with Kevlar® protective panels in our stab proof vests because Kevlar is the only protective material that has passed the standard of time. Kevlar® only degrades by being subject to extreme temperatures and direct UV sunlight, which none of our vests have. The UK Police treat their equipment better then any other force in the world.
Our 25 year long relationship with the UK Police agents and suppliers, coupled together with our huge buying power, means we can offer you UNBEATABLE prices on a Kevlar stab proof vest which is worth a LOT more than we charge.
We currently stock a variety of stab vests, each of which offers the highest levels of protection:
